12-12-12

Today our class participated in the  blog event 12-12-12 on twitter on my co-teachers blog. Classes from all over the world will be participating in this all day long. The boys enjoyed coming up with various lists of their favorite things. We loved hearing what they have to say. If you have time today I would highly recommend getting your students involved in this global blogging event. Check out my boys list here....

Chrustmas Cards Around the World

This year we are participating in a Christmas card exchange with schools all over the world. We will be sending and receiving cards from all over the world. The theme of the card was snowglobes;so we made Memphis snowglobes to let others know more about our city. Here is a Smile Box collage I made of the boys making our cards.

My SK Elves

I love this time of year. I especially love decorating my classroom this time of year.  I decided this year since we would be having an elf on the shelf in our room we should make elves too for our walls too. I stole the idea off of Pinterest , but then tried to make it my own as much as possible. The boys were not given a pattern. They were just told they could dress their elves however they wanted. I think they did a great job!!!

Leaf walk

We took the boys on a leaf walk last week to look at all of the trees changing colors. The boys loved being in the fresh air, and made some great observations about the leaves. It was a perfect time for a picture too; so I thought I would share that too:)

The boys seem to really like having their own personal globe to take home. Here are some pictures of them showing them off yesterday!

Apple Bulletin Board

Well I am back from my blogging hiatus and wanted to share my latest bulletin board. We have been studying apples for the month; so I went with an apple theme for my board. The tree is really easy to make. All you need to do is get some poster board and cut out a tree shape. Then get lots of green tissue paper and get to work. If you want to have your students help go for it!!! I plan on saving this tree and using it for years. Have a great day!!!

Metal Museum

Last Friday we had a very special treat. A blacksmith from the Metal Museum came and did a demonstration for the boys. They loved it and so did all of the teachers. I really did not know that much about blacksmiths and what their tools were called so I was learning right along with the boys. If you are ever looking for a place to take your family on the weekends they do demos at the museum every Saturday. Here is the website if you would like more information about the Metal Museum...http://www.metalmuseum.org/

Marshmellow Math

Last week we did a really fun activity with marshmellows that the boys loved. I put marrshmellows and toothpicks on each table. Then I told them their job was to use these two things to build shapes. They had such a great time doing this, and it was a great way to teach them 3-D shapes.

Super Fun Science Experiment

Last week, I did the neatest experiment with my boys who attend my science camp. We turned pipe cleaners into crystals. The boys absolutely loved it. I found the experiment on Pinterest, and it was quite simple. I let the boys create whatever shape they would like, but I love the holiday themed ones found on the link below. The experiment does call for Borax which you can find near the detergent at any store like Target. I also decided not to add food coloring and just let the color of the pipe cleaner show through the crystals. So if you are looking for a need experiment or something to try with your kids at home click on this link for instructions. Have a great day!!!!

Winter Trees Art Center

I found the cutest idea on Pinterest for our art center. The first group of boys made theirs today, and they did a great job. They are super cute and I have attached the link in case you would like to make them too. Not only is this activity great for their fine motor skills, but I also talked to the boys about the shapes they saw in the pictures. This was a great and easy way for me incorporate math into the activity. Have a great day everyone!!!

MLK Day

Last Friday we celebrated MLK day. One thing we did to help the boys get a better understanding of the day was watch the book You are Special by Max Lucado on You Tube. This book was one of my favorites as a child, and I still love it today. I highly recommend watching this sometime!

MLK bulletin board

Some of my colleague made this incredible bulletin board for Martin Luther King day that I wanted to share with you. They had each student tell them what their dream was for the future , and then they took pictures of each them for the board. What a great way to help students of this age understand the importance of dreams!!! I love working with such creative people!!!

It's a .....

We did a really fun math activity with the boys this week. We let them guess if they think my Wonderful co-teacher Mrs. Perry will have a girl or boy. I gave each boy a piece of paper and told them to draw a picture of what they thought she would have. We then got out our big shower curtain graph and graphed their predictions. The boys of course think a little boy is on the way , but we won't know if their prediction is correct until next week so stay tuned...
